On October 13th Apple hosted its annual announcement even for the next generation of iPhones. It’s an exciting time of the year for any Apple fan and this year’s event was not a disappointment. Taking center stage was the iPhone 12 announcement which included four new models. Apple is clearly intending to maneuver itself into a position where it not only dominates the high-end luxury market, but also offers a more modestly priced introduction into the Apple ecosystem. Let’s take a look at a full breakdown of all the models and upgrades announced.
Looking at the Apple website, there are now five separate models of iPhone available for purchase. There’s the iPhone 12 Pro, the iPhone 12, the iPhone SE, the iPhone 11, and the iPhone XR. But that’s not all, as a couple of these break down into separate models. The iPhone 12 has two models -the regular iPhone 12 and the Mini; while the iPhone 12 Pro also sports two variants, the Pro and Pro Max. It’s all a bit confusing, but Apple is trying to offer an iPhone that can fit into any budget.
Here’s a model-by-model breakdown of Apple’s new iPhone 12 lineup:
The iPhone 12 Pro Max is Apple’s premier iPhone model, incorporating all of the best updates and powerful upgrades of the new generation. iPhone 12 comes with 5G connectivity straight out of the box and showcases the largest screen ever featured on an iPhone at a whopping 6.7 inches. It sports a beefed up suite of 12 megapixel cameras capable of 5x optical zoom range (versus 4x on the iPhone 12 Pro) and vastly improved stabilization features for smooth and shake-free video and pictures. The cameras are equipped with Dolby Vision video recording for smooth 60fps 4K HDR videos. The Pro Max sports three cameras; wide, ultrawide, and a 65mm telephoto lens with all-new LIDAR sensor technology. The LIDAR sensor significantly enhances the phone’s photographic capabilities with rapid low-light autofocus, greatly improved night portraits, and an impressive new augmented reality system.
Apple also made sure to beef up the battery capacity, offering a full 20 hours of HD video playback per charge. All of this is powered by the new A14 Bionic chip which Apple claims to be “the fastest chip in a smartphone”. The A14 Bionic chip promises a faster, more efficient experience with robust processing power and improved machine learning capabilities.
The iPhone Pro Max comes in four distinct colors; silver, graphite, gold, and Pacific blue. It also features an upgraded stainless steel body and all new ‘Ceramic Shield’ which Apple insists will protect the screen four times better than the previous model.
Price: Pricing varies with storage capacity. The 128GB model will run you $1,099, while the 256GB model will cost $1,199, and finally the 512GB version will cost $1,399.
The iPhone 12 Pro is the second-beefiest phone in the new lineup. It also features 5G connectivity but with a slightly smaller screen at 6.1 inches. It is still capable of 60fps HDR video recording, albeit with a bit less zoom range; and its battery lasts long enough for 17 hours of HD video playback per charge. Beyond that, it has all the same bells and whistles as the more expensive Pro Max version, including color choices, A14 Bionic chip, LIDAR sensor, and telephoto camera.
Price: Pricing varies with storage capacity. 128GB of storage will cost $999, while 256GB will cost $1,099, and 512GB model will cost $1,299.
The baseline iPhone 12 boasts many of the same features as the Pro and Pro Max while being a bit nicer to your wallet. It is the same size as the Pro model (6.1 inches) and comes equipped with the A14 Bionic chip, 5G capability, 17 hours of battery life for HD video playback, Ceramic Shield screen protection, water resistance, and Apple’s signature XDR Retina display. What’s missing is the telephoto camera and LIDAR sensor and the 4x optical zoom range. One thing the baseline iPhone 12 model has that the Pro and Pro Max models do not have is more color variety. It will be available in white, black, red, green, and dark blue. Price: Pricing varies with storage capacity. 64GB will cost $799, 128GB will cost $849, and the 256GB version will cost $949. The unlocked versions and the versions sold by T-Mobile will cost an additional $30.
Something people have been asking for a long time, the iPhone 12 Mini is now a reality. The Mini comes packed with all the same features as the regular iPhone 12 including the same cameras, storage capacity, processing chip, 5G capability, water and dust resistance, Ceramic Shield, Retina display, and color choices. The only differences between the Mini and regular iPhone 12 is the smaller 5.4 inch screen and slightly reduced battery capacity at 15 hours of HD video playback per charge. The Mini is the perfect size for kids or people with smaller hands.
Price: The 64GB model will cost $699, the 128GB model will cost $749, the 256GB model will cost $849. Again, the unlocked or T-Mobile versions will cost an additional $30.
Overall, a new phone from the iPhone 12 lineup will cost anywhere from $699 to $1,399; a pretty wide spread of prices that will allow a lower barrier to entry into the Apple ecosystem. And if $699 is still too expensive, the older iPhone 11, iPhone XR, and iPhone SE can all be purchased for $599, $499, and $399, respectively. That means it’s possible to spend as little as $400 or as much as $1,400 on an iPhone, making it a great value for any budget.
